General Instructions for Replacing ODS/Pilot Assembly

Annual Replacement Recommended

** These are general instruction and all heaters may not require the same steps or have the same components as indicated in these instructions.

1. Turn heater off and let cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning to replace the Pilot.
• If so equipped, make sure the selector switch is in the OFF position.
• Also turn off the main gas line to the appliance.
• Carefully remove the front panel or glass from the heater. **
• Carefully remove the log assembly and place in a safe location until servicing is completed. **
2. Locate the pilot using the illustrated parts list of the Owners Manual.
• It may be necessary to remove the heater assembly from the firebox on some models. **
3. Using two 7/16 wrenches loosen the connection between the pilot tube and the pilot.
Warning: If there is not a second wrench “FLAT” location provided on the ODS/Pilot tube extra care must be taken to not over torque the nut and damage the pilot tube.
4. Remove the igniter cable from the pilot.
5. Using a 5/16 wrench, remove the thermocouple wire from the gas control valve.
Note: Some ODS/Pilot assemblies will have a thermopile pre-installed in bracket.
Please follow the instruction below for Thermopile wire removal and replacement.**
• Remove the White wire from the “TP TH” terminal of the gas control valve.
• Remove the Red wire from the “TH” terminal of the gas control valve.
• Always make a note of wire color and positions before removal.
6. Remove and retain (for re-assembly) the fasteners that hold the pilot to the pilot bracket. These fasteners will either be screws or nuts.
• These fasteners and any additional parts (shields) will need to be used during reassembly.
7. Now remove the pilot from the heater assembly.
8. Install the new pilot assembly exactly as the original using the original fasteners and any additional pieces such as shielding that may have been present and removed during the disassembly process.
9. Thread thermocouple wire to the valve and tighten the connector to ¼ turn past finger tight. Care must be taken to not over tighten this fitting because it may damage the connector.
10. Using the same two 7/16 wrenches carefully reconnect the connection between the pilot tube and the pilot.
Warning: If there is not a second wrench “FLAT” location provided on the ODS/Pilot tube extra care must be taken to not over torque the nut and damage the pilot tube.
Note: Some ODS/Pilot assemblies will have a thermopile pre-installed in bracket.
Please follow the instruction below for Thermopile wire removal and replacement.**
• Connect the White wire to the “TP TH” terminal of the gas control valve.
• Connect the Red wire to the “TH” terminal of the gas control valve.
• If wire color or position was different connect per notes taken.**
11. Connect the igniter cable to the electrode.
12. If your appliance was removed from the gas supply you must now reconnect the gas supply to your appliance and test for any leaks using an approved gas leak detection solution.
• Please consult your Owner’s Manual or local codes for approved solutions. **
13. Complete the installation by following the installation instructions in the owner’s manual.
